What is CHEST - MND?
CHEST – MND is a study that combines hyperinflation (abnormal increase in the volume of air remaining in the lungs after exhalation) and expiratory strength training (respiratory therapy where patients perform exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in breathing out) in people living with Motor Neurone Disease. It is a Pilot trial assessing the feasibility and impact of a combined lung volume recruitment and expiratory muscle strength training program on respiratory function, cough strength, symptoms and quality of life in people with MND. There is no placebo arm in this study; all participants undergo a 5 – week no intervention lead in period followed by active respiratory training. The trial aims to inform the design of future larger scale studies by evaluating adherence, acceptability, and preliminary physiological outcomes.
