MND clinics

There are motor neurone disease clinics or services available across Australia.

The aim of these clinics is to provide a coordinated and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and managing MND symptoms and other issues that come with MND. The health professionals involved in these clinics and services are experienced in MND.

The clinics are usually held in outpatient clinics at a hospital, which means the people with MND come into the clinic for review but aren’t admitted to the hospital.

MND Clinics usually comprise of a neurologist and other specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who specialise in MND and provide the opportunity for people with MND to see the team for advice and guidance on a regular basis.

Your visits to your MND clinic and the multidisciplinary team members’ consultations is usually covered by Medicare unless the clinic is privately run. You will need to discuss any out of pocket expenses with the clinic coordinator or your neurologist.

Learn more about how health professionals can help

People living with motor neurone disease are likely to need advice about mobility, communication, breathing, nutrition, managing other symptoms and getting community support.

How you manage some of your earlier symptoms can affect how other, later-developing, symptoms can be managed. However, many health professionals may rarely see people with motor neurone disease during the course of their working life. Attending an MND specific clinic or service is therefore something you may like to do.

Studies have shown that the health professionals you consult can give you better care and advice when they are knowledgeable about motor neurone disease. Having a team of professionals involved in your care who know about MND and who can help to coordinate your care has to be a positive thing.

Multidisciplinary care via a MND clinic can provide:

  • confirmation of diagnosis
  • referral to professionals in a coordinated way, so that any difficulties can be dealt with promptly
  • regular review of symptoms
  • opportunities to get specialised advice from a broad range of health and community care professionals.
  • many clinics bulk bill their patients so this can help with the cost of seeing specialist health professionals

When you arrive at an MND clinic, you and your carer will usually wait in a consultation room and the staff take turns coming in and reviewing your needs.

The staff form a team of varied health professionals who understand MND and who work with you to support your management of the disease. Teams vary from hospital to hospital but may include a:

  • Neurologist
  • Clinical Nurse Consultant
  • Dietitian
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physiotherapist
  • Speech Pathologist
  • Social Worker
  • Psychologist, and
  • MND Advisor.

The team will often hold meetings to make sure that your needs are met and well planned for, meetings which are also known as case conferences.

Case conferences are held on clinic days. The team will discuss their recommendations and treatment on a case by case basis to provide the best possible care and support – care that is timely, organised and tailored to your needs.

Referral to a MND clinic is recommended, where possible, to confirm a diagnosis of MND.

You will need a referral from either from your Neurologist or GP to visit an MND clinic. Once you have a referral, you then contact your local clinic and ask any questions you have and organise an appointment.

Your MND Advisor is also a great source of information about your local MND clinic so don’t hesitate to discuss and questions you may have with them or to contact the MND clinic contacts noted in this web content.
